The AIA Dayton Architecture Scholarship Fund of The Dayton Foundation was established in 1997 to encourage and assist students graduating or graduated from high schools in the Dayton/Miami Valley Region to pursue a degree in architecture at a college or university with an NAAB accredited architecture program. Scholarship recipients were selected on the basis of their academic achievements, artistic talent, and an essay about their educational and career goals as they relate to the field of Architecture. The scholarships are funded through the generous donations of AIA Dayton Members, contributions from AIA Dayton, and through a matching funds grant from the American Institute of Architects. The fund is administered by AIA Dayton, a chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

AIA DAYTON FIRMS PARTICIPATE IN THE STRATEGIC RE-USE PROJECT

March 2010. Despite an ominous weather forecast, over 30 volunteers arrived in their working clothes early Saturday morning outside an East Dayton home. The house, sponsored by AIA, was one of 27 in the area being renovated as part of National Rebuilding Day. Fortunately, the thunderstorms stayed away as high school students, interns, architects, and family members teamed up to paint the house, garage, and ramp. Flowerbeds were created to brighten the front yard. Crumbling concrete steps and walkways were demolished and formwork put in place.

The homeowner, an elderly gentleman with limited mobility, and his daughter expressed sincere appreciation for the volunteers' work. "He was amazed and grateful beyond words," said Jim Faulkner who talked to the homeowner after concrete was poured the following Tuesday. Additional improvements still underway include electrical work and hiring a professional mason to repair two chimneys. Thank you everyone who came out to help on a not so sunny day!

PK Night

November 2009. The Excelsior Building at 207 E. 6th Street, Oregon District was the location of Pecha Kucha. Pe-chawk-cha. "This is the most fun I've ever had at an AIA event!", exclaimed Barry Buckman, AIA, President Elect of AIA Dayton. Barry, along with approximately 100 other participants crowded the second floor of the Excelsior Building in the Oregon District last Friday night to hear nine local speakers share their talents and interests in 20 slides and 6 minutes 40 seconds of dialogue. Four architects, an interior designer, a landscape designer and three artists espoused their knowledge on a colorful variety of topics from the negative impact the 1950's had on good design in urban planning to the celebration of funk in Dayton to Evel Knievel jumping the Snake River Canyon.

Thanks to Platinum Sponsors Pella Sales and Snyder Brick and Block for making this program possible. Also thanks to the Focus on Design PK Lecture Committee: Kim Duncan, Elements IV; Tessa Kalman; Fernando Oseguera, App Architecture; Matt Sauer, Rogero Buckman Architects; Jill Davis, Design Forum; Tim Bement, App Architecture; and Ken Raiteri, John Poe Architects.
