A
SQUEALING AND APPEALING LESSON IN ARCHITECTURE
A classic children's story meets contemporary home design in "The Three
Little Pigs: An Architectural Tale," by Steven Guarnaccia. So which house
will withstand the big bad wolf's huffing and puffing? Will it be Frank
Gehry's house made of scraps (1978)? Or Philip Johnson's Glass House (1949)?
Or Frank Lloyd Wright's concrete Fallingwater (1935)? The book is like
Modern Design 101 with furniture, accessories and other famous houses
throughout by the likes of Eileen Gray, Buckminster Fuller, Eero Saarinen,
Nathalie Du Pasquier and Philippe Starck. Click

THE CITY: GOOD DESIGN PROMOTES EFFICIENT AIR CONDITIONING
A fundamental strategy for reducing heat transfer from outdoors to indoors
is to configure wisely a building's overall form. The form must be artful
but sufficiently compact to avoid excessive exterior surface area. Solar
orientation also greatly affects seasonal cooling loads. Click

ARCHITECTURE GROUP CALLS FOR A BEEFED-UP ENERGY TAX BILL
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) on Monday called on House Ways
and Means Chairman Sandy Levin (D-Mich.) to add to his green energy jobs
bill provisions that promote energy efficiency in commercial buildings.
“Early drafts of the bill show that only a paltry six percent of the bill
would go towards energy efficiency in buildings — and none for commercial
buildings, which consume nearly 20 percent of all energy consumption in
the United States,” the group states. Click
