2006 Design Awards Gala

Over 160 architects, industry professionals, clients, and community leaders celebrated outstanding architecture at the 2006 AIA Dayton Honor Awards Program on Tuesday, November 14 at the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Center. This year's awards program recognized achievements for a broad range of architectural activity, established a standard of excellence against which all architects can measure their work, and informed the public of the breadth and value of architectural design.

Highlights of the evening included:
Khalid Moss and his band provided the musical entertainment during the reception and dinner.

Dinner was served in the Wintergarden and began with an invocation by Mayor Rhine McLin. Additional community leaders in attendance included: Stanley Earley, Assistant City Manager; Matt Joseph, City of Dayton Commissioner; Nan Whaley, City of Dayton Commissioner; Joey Williams, City of Dayton Commissioner; and Len Roberts, City Commission Clerk.

The awards program, led by Master of Ceremonies WDTN-TV's Carl Day, included the presentation of the 2006 AIA Dayton Architecture Advocacy Award to John Gower, Director of the City of Dayton Planning & Community Development Department. The award recognized John's enduring advocacy for design excellence in architecture, his leadership in urban design and city planning, and his visionary devotion to the continued success of Dayton, Ohio. John follows in the footsteps of past Architecture Advocacy Award recipients including Congressman Michael Turner, Dr. David Ponitz, and David Holmes.

All three jurors for this year's design awards program attended that Gala to present their jury comments while pictures of the awarded projects were projected on a large screen.
